What a great visit! Farmer Jen and Farmer Peg welcomed 67 children and adults for a “hands on” field trip. Students learned about vegetable gardening, what parts of the plants we eat, and got to help harvest sugar snap peas and radishes. They were a big help!

The kids also got to see Farmer Peg’s worm farm. They kids loved touching the worms and learning about vermi-composting.

I think the favorite part of the day was when we visited the chickens! Students got to pet and feed the chickens and gather eggs from the nesting boxes.

Yesterday we got the very first (maiden) egg from the baby chicks we bought back in February. It is tiny…

Maiden egg on the right

And we are up to today’s excitement! 99.9% of our spring tomato harvest has gone to a restaurant called Oxheart. The Houston Chronicle’s food critic, Alison Cook, put together a list of the Top 100 Houston Restaurants. She named Oxheart the #1 restaurant in Houston. The print copy of the review came out in today’s Houston Chronicle 29-95 section. Here is a picture of the paper:

Yes, those are our tomatoes on the cover of the paper! We are very excited. If you go to the online article, and scroll halfway down the page you will see another picture of our tomatoes, and we are even mentioned by name!
http://pix.29-95.com/2012/section/alison-cooks-top-100-houston-restaurants/

If feels good to know that what we are producing is good enough to make it into the finest restaurants in Houston. And congratulations to Justin, Justin, Karen, and the entire Oxheart staff for your #1 ranking. We feel very fortunate be be working with you.

The hens we bought in October have started laying. The first ones to start laying at the farm were the leghorns, which started laying about 2 weeks ago. Our leghorns are our only chicken variety that lays white eggs, so it was easy to tell who was laying. We kept a leghorn at the house in our pet flock (her name is Blanco), but there haven’t been any white eggs in the nesting boxes. All of our other pet birds from the October hens have started laying, so we have been searching the yard looking to see if she was laying somewhere outside of the nesting boxes. Our yard isn’t that big, so it is an easy search… unless she is hiding her eggs.

Yesterday I was out wandering in the yard, and saw Blanco sitting in the back of one of my large potted bamboos. All of the hens dig in the bamboos, and do their dust baths in the larger pots, so I didn’t think anything of it. 10 minutes later she was messing around with the bamboo leaves that had fallen in the pot, and then she jumped out, and started doing the egg bragging clucks… when chickens lay their eggs they typically leave the nest and walk around bragging very loudly about their accomplishment. When I saw her strutting around doing her clucks I put 2 and 2 together and went to look in the pot.

I didn’t see anything at first glance, but upon further inspection I found what we had been searching for.

She had dug a nest, lined it with bamboo leaves, had been laying her eggs in the nest, and then covering them up with more bamboo leaves.

Closer view:

We robbed her nest of the eggs, but left the nest intact. It will be interesting to see if she continues to lay in the pot, or if she starts laying in the nesting box.

This spring has been very wet and warm, and the plants have taken notice. As I was walking through the home vegetable garden on March 31st I was pleasantly surprised at what I found. I went back inside to get the camera, because being from Minnesota you aren’t supposed to have fresh veggies in March. The following is a sample of what I found:

First up: Peppers!

Gypsy Peppers

Golden Treasure Pepper

Golden Marconi Pepper

Next comes the tomatoes:

Lots of tomatoes!

Early Girl (maybe?)

Lots of cherry type tomatoes

Our basil is doing awesome. We plucked some and made bruschetta for dinner last night.

Sweet Basil

A couple 65 gallon pots full of potatoes…

Potatoes

And of course no post would be complete without a picture of a chicken, who desperately wants to get into the garden and eat everything green.

Mandy, the destroyer of vegetables
